Save the Refugee Youth (SRY) Founding Story
The story of Save the Refugee Youth began with two individuals, Gabriel Karerangabo and Kelly Nsabiyera who shared a common history of displacement and a deep commitment to improving the lives of refugee youth. Both were forced to flee their home country, Burundi, in 2015 due to political instability, finding refuge in Mahama Refugee Camp in Rwanda. Despite living in the same camp for years, their paths did not cross until they met at university, where their shared experiences and aspirations brought them together.
Both Gabriel and Kelly had experienced challenges that included barriers to employment, limited opportunities for self-reliance, and a lack of platforms to develop their potential. They realized that these struggles were not just personal but systemic issues affecting thousands of refugees, particularly the youth, who often lacked access to resources and support to build sustainable livelihoods.
This realization sparked a vision. They saw the potential in refugee youth to become leaders, innovators, and contributors to their communities if given the right opportunities and support. Drawing from their experiences and shared passion, they co-founded Save the Refugee Youth to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity. Their mission is to empower refugee youth to overcome barriers, access education and develop skills to achieve self-reliance and contribute to community development.
The organization is built on a foundation of advocacy, skill development, mentorship and entrepreneurship. It focuses on equipping youth with practical skills, fostering innovation, and creating pathways to economic independence. SRYV also emphasizes the importance of advocating for refugees' rights to education, inclusion, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society.
